Boules, also known as petanque, is a traditional French sport similar to the game of lawn bowling. The aim is to throw or roll the balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cachonet or jack, while also trying to knock your opponent's balls away.
The origins of boules can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was played with stones. However, the modern game of boules is believed to have originated in the early 1900s in the southern French town of La Ciotat. It quickly spread throughout France and became a popular pastime among soldiers during World War I and is now recognised as an Olympic sport. Originally played with wooden balls, hollow metal balls were introduced in the 1920s adapted from cannonball manufacturing technology.
In addition to being a fun and social activity, boules also requires strategy and precision, making it a mentally stimulating game. Whether played competitively or for leisure, boules can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill level.
