Noughts and Crosses has ancient roots, with similar games being played in ancient Egypt and Rome as early as 1300 BCE. About a thousand years ago it was popular in Persia (modern day Iran), and Italian traders exported the game where it expanded through Europe and became quite popular with the lower classes. At one stage it was banned by the Pope, believing it to have an association with Pagan rituals. Remains of noughts and crosses boards carved into stone from the Middle Ages have been uncovered in Spain.
More recently the game has been used to train artificial intelligence, and is a teaching tool to introduce basic concepts of game theory, strategic thinking, probability and planning.
The game seems to be quite simple but there are 255,168 possible combinations, and world championships are held in Europe.
