Quoits, a traditional game with roots dating back centuries, has evolved into a popular pastime enjoyed by people of all ages.
The game is believed to have originated in ancient Greece, where it was played with horseshoes. Quoits is supposedly the game the ancient Greek deity Apollo was playing with his love Hyacinth which ultimately resulted in his death. The Romans then later spread the game to Britain.
Over time, it spread to different regions, adapting to local materials and rules. The name currently used comes from the Old French 'coite', meaning flat stone. The English version of quoits gained popularity in the 19th century, particularly in pubs and social gatherings, solidifying its place as a classic outdoor game. Official rules first appeared in April 1881, written by a body formed from pubs in Northern England.
The game promotes hand-eye coordination, balance, and precision and is a great addition to any backyard gathering.
