Players usually stand a set distance away from the board and take turns throwing a designated number of rings, often six. The hooks are numbered differently, and the scores are calculated based on the rings that successfully land on them.
Hookey can find its roots in the Irish pub game Ring Board, also known as Game of Rings. In English pubs the game took its name 'hookey' from the hooks or pegs that are used as targets.
